Buying & Decision Making Process

This week’s blog will be on the topic of buying and decision making. Furthermore, this blog will go through the 6 stage process that everyone takes when buying a new product. Below is one of the processes that I went through when purchasing a new smart phone.

iPhone on the left & Google Pixel on the right.

1. Problem & need recognition

For my example of the decision making process I noticed that my old iPhone 6 was starting to slow down and its battery would drain far too quickly, it was this that made me notice that I needed a new phone.

2. Research

I have stuck with Apple since the iPhone 3 as they are very popular smart phones. However, through my research I had been intrigued by what Google were doing with their new Android phones known as the Google Pixel. This phone (at the time) was on its 3rd version called the Google Pixel 3 which is far more affordable then the latest iPhone

3. Evaluation of alternatives

Through my evaluation of the alternatives (Apple’s latest iPhone vs Google Pixel 3) the main factors of which was the major difference in price, Apple’s iPhone X being £899 or the Google Pixel 3a being only £399. Additionally, I had already owed a variety of Google products; Google Home, Gmail, Chrome-cast, etc.

4. Final decision

I decided to purchase the Google Pixel 3a as the smart phone was incredibly affordable and seemed to match my preferences perfectly. Also, this would mean I’d have a variety of Google products and therefore be part of that ecosystem and brand consistency.

5. Purchase

For the purchase I went to a Carphone Warehouse so I could purchase the phone with no contract and a 1 month money back guarantee as switching from Apple to Android is a big change and could have a technical risk. Additionally, I didn’t want a contract as I recently switched my sim card from giffgaff to VOXI.

6. Post-purchase evaluation.

6 months later and I am very happy with my purchase, the phone has had no problems and has excelled where my older iPhone would have the odd issue with.

Hello Carter, interesting read on your opinion on buying and decision-making process. I have heard that Apple was slowing the iPhone 6 line of phones some time ago. As an avid Android supporter, I appreciate you did your research on the alternatives. Googles phones are known for their cameras and basic software. I would want to ask why did you switch from giffgaff to voxi as this is the first time I ever heard about them.

Hello Boris, Yes switching from giffgaff to VOXI was a no-brainer for me. I saw many promotions from VOXI and their endless social media deal and was instantly intrigued as I would usually max out my giffgaff data on Instagram & Snapchat after one day of using it. As a result of switching these data plans I now have not only 3x as much data for non social media apps such as Google, Spotify, etc. but now, due to endless social media, running out of data doesn’t happen to me anymore.

Hey 🙂
I would like to start by saying, really nice website! It shows you put the time to develop it and make it different and creative. This post is very interesting and for me, it makes perfect sense the way you describe the entire process, it was smart from you to buy your new phone on a shop that offers you the possibility to try it for 1 month and see if it’s the right fit for you since many people find they didn’t like switching from the iOS to Android.

I also recently changed from giffgaff to VOXI 😛
I kinda need a new smartphone and I’ve been thinking about giving iOS a try, since I’ve always worked with Android my entire life. However, the price factor is really holding me back… Not sure if iPhones are worth all that money and after reading your post I think I’ll stick with Android for a little longer!
